Top 4 Outdoor Plants to Grow as Houseplants

by Donna Coakley-Mcgowan 04/12/2023

If you've dreamt of having a lush and colorful garden but don't have the space or climate to support it, consider keeping houseplants instead. There are many varieties of outdoor plants you can grow inside your home as houseplants if you need or prefer. Here are some of the top garden favorites to grow indoors, no matter where you live:

Fuchsia

Fuchsia are often found cascading from hanging baskets outdoors. While they make wonderful decorative plants outside, they can also thrive indoors if you give them enough sun. During the growing season, try to provide your potted fuchsia at least six hours of sun per day. In the winter, the plant will go dormant and prefer a shadier spot until it's ready to bloom again.

Geranium

Geraniums are a garden favorite across many climates. They're hardy and simple to care for indoors as well. The best thing about growing geraniums as a houseplant is its ease of bloom throughout the winter in a sunny window. Allow geraniums to dry out between waterings and trim faded blooms to promote new growth.

Caladium

Caladium have vibrant, varied foliage and can thrive as houseplants in any climate. As long as you can keep their indoor environment above 60 degrees Fahrenheit and provide a bit of humidity, you can enjoy their dramatic and multicolored leaves through most of the year. Even when grown indoors, caladium goes dormant in the winter but will bounce back when the season changes.

Coleus

Coleus is another plant appreciated for its colorful foliage rather than blooms. It does very well indoors and outdoors and only requires medium amounts of sunlight to survive. The myriad color combinations give you the opportunity to brighten up your home with these easy-growing plants as long as you keep their soil evenly moist.
